 DTF Transfer Application Guide: Time, Temperature & Pressure

Pressing DTF transfers correctly takes less than two minutes per garment, once you know the settings. Below are the exact time, temperature, and pressure settings we recommend at Pressing Images, plus troubleshooting for the most common application problems.

If your transfers peel, crack, or fail in the wash, the most common cause is not enough pressure during application. A properly calibrated heat press applying firm, even pressure across the entire design is essential. The exact time, temperature, peel, and post-press settings are listed below.

Step-by-Step Application

Step 1: Pre-press the garment.

Pre-press the garment for 3 to 5 seconds at your target temperature. This removes moisture and wrinkles. Moisture prevents the adhesive from bonding. Skipping this step is another leading cause of transfer failure.

Step 2: Position the transfer.

Place the DTF transfer film-side down on the garment in the desired location. The film is the clear or matte carrier layer. Position carefully, you do not get a second chance to reposition after heat is applied.

Step 3: Press.

Close the heat press and apply medium-to-firm pressure for 10 to 15 seconds at 295 to 310°F. Lower temperatures cause incomplete adhesion. Higher temperatures can cause the transfer to bond to the carrier film instead of the garment.

Step 4: Hot peel.

Lift the press. Immediately, while the transfer is still warm, peel the carrier film at a low angle. Peeling at a steep angle or after cooling causes the design to appear rough or incomplete.

If any section of the design starts to lift with the carrier film, lay the film back down, press for 3 to 5 more seconds, and peel again from a different edge.

Step 5: Post-press to seal.

Cover the pressed design with parchment paper and press for 5 to 8 seconds at the same temperature. This step seals the ink into the adhesive layer and significantly improves wash durability. Do not skip it.

Troubleshooting

Transfer lifting at edges after washing.

The post-press was skipped or too short. Always follow with a 5 to 8 second post-press with parchment paper cover.

Design feels rough or bumpy.

Temperature was too low or press time too short. Increase temperature by 5°F and add 2 to 3 seconds.

Carrier film won't peel cleanly.

Temperature was too high. Reduce by 5 to 10°F. The adhesive has re-bonded to the carrier instead of the fabric.

Transfer not sticking at all.

Garment had moisture (skipped pre-press) or the press is running cold. Use an infrared thermometer to verify actual platen temperature. Consumer presses often read 10 to 20°F higher than actual temperature.

White edge visible around the design.

Normal and expected. DTF transfers include a white underbase layer. The visible white edge is typically less than 0.5mm and not noticeable from arm's length.

You do not need any pre-treatment or primer. DTF transfers work directly on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and most other fabric types.
