UV DTF Transfer Application Guide
UV DTF Transfer Application Guide
UV DTF transfers are peel-and-stick. No heat press, no curing equipment, no special tools. The process takes under two minutes per piece. Below is the complete application guide for UV DTF wraps and decals from Pressing Images.
What UV DTF Works On
UV DTF transfers bond to smooth, non-porous hard surfaces:
- Stainless steel tumblers and drinkware
- Powder-coated metal tumblers
- Glass (mugs, cups, candles, bottles)
- Acrylic blanks
- Ceramic
- Plastic (most types)
- Painted wood (sealed/smooth surfaces)
UV DTF does not work on fabric, silicone, rubber grips, or heavily textured surfaces.
What You Need
- UV DTF transfer (wrap or decal)
- Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) and a lint-free cloth
- A firm squeegee, credit card, or gift card
That's it.
Step-by-Step Application
Step 1: Pre-squeegee the transfer. Before peeling anything, lay the transfer flat and run your squeegee firmly across both the front (design side) and back of the transfer 2–3 times with solid pressure. This bonds the adhesive layer fully to the design layer. Do not skip this step.
Step 2: Clean the surface.Wipe the application surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth. Remove all dust, oil, fingerprints, and residue. Let dry completely (30–60 seconds). Do not touch the cleaned surface with bare hands after cleaning.
Step 3: Peel the backing.Hold the transfer with the white paper backing facing up. Starting at one short edge, peel the backing away at a very low angle. Only expose the first 1–2 inches of the adhesive side to start — you will apply as you peel.
Step 4: Apply section by section.Press the exposed adhesive edge onto the surface at your starting point. Squeegee it down firmly. Continue peeling the backing and squeegeeing in 1–2 inch sections, working steadily around the surface. On curved surfaces like tumblers: apply gentle downward tension on the wrap as you go around the widest curve, then release tension as you approach the edges.
Do not stretch the material. Stretching causes the wrap to contract after application and lift at the edges.
Step 5: Squeegee the full surface.Once the entire transfer is applied, run the squeegee firmly over the full design — edge to edge, top to bottom. Pay extra attention to the seam and any edges.
For small bubbles: pin, then press out the air with your fingernail.
Step 6: Remove the top film.Peel the clear carrier film slowly at a low angle. If any section of the design starts to lift with the film, stop, press that section firmly against the surface for 10–15 seconds, and peel from a different angle.
In cold rooms or winter conditions, warm the tumbler or surface by holding it in your hands for a minute before applying — cold surfaces reduce initial adhesion.
Quick Reference
| Step | Action | |
|---|---|---|
| --- | --- | |
| 1 | Pre-squeegee both sides of the transfer — 2–3 firm passes | |
| 2 | Clean surface with isopropyl alcohol — let dry completely | |
| 3 | Peel backing from one edge — expose 1–2 inches only | |
| 4 | Apply section by section — peel and squeegee as you go | |
| 5 | Squeegee full surface — edges and seam especially | |
| 6 | Peel top carrier film slowly — low angle |
Troubleshooting
Bubbles won't go away.Squeegee more firmly and more slowly. For large bubbles: pin the bubble with a fine pin, press out the air with your fingernail. The pin hole is invisible once flattened.
Design stayed on the backing instead of the film.Pre-squeegeeing was skipped or not firm enough. This occasionally happens on a specific transfer — contact us and we will replace it.
Top film is pulling the design off the tumbler. The surface wasn't clean enough, or adhesion needs more contact time. Wait 5–10 minutes after application before removing the top film in cold environments.
Wrap is lifting at edges after a few days.Surface had invisible contamination (oils, wax, cleaning product residue). Re-clean with fresh isopropyl alcohol on a brand new cloth and re-apply a new wrap.
Care Instructions for UV DTF Decorated Items
- Hand wash is recommended for longest life
- Do not scrub the decorated area with abrasive pads
- Dishwasher heat and harsh detergents will reduce adhesion over time
- Items are waterproof under normal use
