What Is UV DTF and How Is It Different from Regular DTF?
UV DTF is not a variation of regular DTF. They are two completely different technologies that happen to share two letters in their name. Understanding that difference determines whether you order the right product for your project — or the wrong one.
Regular DTF transfers go on fabric using a heat press. UV DTF transfers go on hard surfaces with no heat press at all — you peel the backing and press them on like a sticker. The ink chemistry, the substrate compatibility, the application method, and the end result are all different.
What Is Regular DTF?
DTF (Direct to Film) is a heat transfer for fabric. A design is printed onto a special film with sublimation-compatible ink, coated with adhesive powder, and cured. You position the transfer on fabric, press with a heat press at 295–310°F for 10–15 seconds, hot peel the carrier film, and press again to seal.
DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends, and most other fabric types in any colour. It belongs in the same category as screen printing and heat transfer vinyl — it's a method for decorating garments and soft goods.
What Is UV DTF?
UV DTF is a peel-and-stick decal technology. A design is printed with UV-cured ink on a film with a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing. UV (ultraviolet) light cures the ink at the point of printing, making it extremely durable and chemically resistant before it ever reaches your hands.
To apply a UV DTF transfer: pre-squeegee both sides of the transfer, peel the backing paper, position the design on the surface, press firmly, and peel away the top carrier film. No heat. No special equipment. Takes under two minutes.
UV DTF works on hard, non-porous surfaces: stainless steel, glass, acrylic, ceramic, plastic, powder-coated metal, and wood. It does not work on fabric.

Why UV DTF Changed Tumbler Customization
Before UV DTF, decorating tumblers required sublimation equipment — a sublimation printer, sublimation ink, sublimation-coated tumblers, and a heat press. It worked beautifully, but the setup cost kept many crafters from getting started.
UV DTF wraps removed that barrier entirely. You can decorate a 30oz Stanley-style tumbler in under two minutes with no equipment. The adhesive bonds permanently to metal, glass, and powder-coated surfaces. The UV-cured ink is waterproof and scratch-resistant.
A crafter in a Calgary apartment with no studio space can now sell custom tumblers on Etsy and run them as a business. That's what UV DTF made possible.
UV DTF Tumbler Wraps
The most popular form of UV DTF is the tumbler wrap — a single piece sized to wrap fully around a 20oz or 30oz tumbler. Pressing Images stocks hundreds of tumbler wrap designs, from floral to hockey to stained glass to Mom/Dad to abstract patterns, all in stock and shipping same day.

UV DTF is not a replacement for regular DTF. They don't compete — they solve different problems.
UV DTF will not adhere to fabric. If you try it, the adhesive won't bond properly and the transfer will peel off.
UV DTF does not work on soft, flexible, or textured surfaces like silicone grips, rubber, or heavily textured paint. The adhesive needs full contact with a smooth surface.
UV DTF does not layer well over vinyl or other transfers — the adhesive needs direct contact with the base surface.
